“Detroit welcomed a 17-foot statue titled “Waiting” , overlooking Campus Martius Park on, Friday, May 18th. The hype about the urban cartoon landscape was because of legendary street artist, KAWS. Purchased by Quicken Loans founder, Dan Gilbert, and wife Jennifer, the Mickey Mouse inspired sculpture is made from two tons of bronze, and is said to be a continuation of KAWS’s “Companion” figures. The sculpture displays a parent and its child in skull and crossbones “In a moment of pause,” according to Library’s Street Collective museum press release.

Brian “KAWS” Donnelly’s, “Waiting” looks ominously across One Campus Martius at guests and employees visiting the former Compuware headquarters, in the Detroit’s business district. It joins the ranks of provocative art, while demanding attention from its admirers. Aside from this being the most iconic cartoon in history, this popular attraction is in the heart of the city, in the midst of inner city culture.

KAWS is a Brooklyn native who reconstructed the MTV “Moonman” for MTV VMA Awards in 2013. In 2014, his art was featured in the packaging for the Pharrell Williams’ project.

KAWS’s new piece of art will hold its viewing party Tuesday, May 22nd 6pm-8pm EST, with him in attendance. “
